FWC Sponsors Kids Fishing Clinic
Fort Clinch State Park, Amelia Island Florida
June 17, 2006

Over four hundred kids from NE Florida and their parents visited Fort Clinch State Park today and experienced the FWC Kids Fishing Clinic. It was a bright, sunny day, and the fish cooperated; kids caught speckled trout, flounder, red drum, spade fish, and whiting. Before they went out on the pier to fish, all the kids experienced the educational program presented by FWC which included knot tying, an introduction to fishing tackle, a short course on conservation and how to handle fish, a touch tank to see crabs and other sea animals, and a chance to practice casting. Local Amelia Island fishermen and adult volunteers from all over Florida were present to help the kids learn about fishing and make sure everyone had a good time.

Kids’ Fishing Clinics are one-day educational events established by the Outreach and Education section of the Division of Marine Fisheries Management, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. One of the main goals for the Kids’ Fishing Clinics is to create responsible marine resource stewards by teaching children the vulnerability of Florida’s marine ecosystems. In addition, they hope to teach fundamental saltwater fishing skills and to provide kids with a positive fishing experience.

FWC officers were on hand to answer questions, visit with the kids, and even bait a few hooks.

Casting practice was the last stop for the kids before going out onto the pier to fish.

Touch tanks gave the kids the opportunity to touch and hold different kinds of crabs and sea animals.

The pier was a busy place as hundreds of enthusiastic kids began fishing.

FWC provided each child who attended the clinic with a rod and reel, and bait so that everyone could fish.

A good time was had by everyone who attended the clinic.

Austin Conner also caught a nice Sea Trout.

Cassandra Ortiz caught a Spadefish.

Since 1996, more than 36,000 children and 21,000 parents have participated in FWC's Kids Fishing Clinics. None of this would have been possible without the 5,000 volunteers who have come out to assist in educating these young anglers about fishing techniques, marine habitats, ethical angling, and conservation.

FWC holds twelve fishing clinics for kids each year at various locations throughout Florida. For more information, visit the FWC web site or call the Outreach and Education office at (850) 488-6058.

A bad day of fishing is much better than a good day of cutting the grass.
