Amelia Island Fishing Spots

Egan's Creek at Atlantic Avenue

Egan's Creek starts at the river and winds it's way south through the northern end of the island. A new set of flood gates were installed under Atlantic Avenue in 2004, and the water is a bit faster with the tides now but the fish seem to like that. This is one of the few spots where there is public access to the creek. (map).

You can fish on either side of Atlantic Avenue at Egan's Creek, but be careful; watch the traffic as the parking lanes are very skinny. The north side of the creek seems more productive, and you can expect to catch reds, trout, and other fish here. Try live shrimp on the high and outgoing tide or jigs for trout.

The gate modifications have made the water much deeper on the south side of the road, and if you have some small kids who want a quick fishing trip, the south side is loaded with pinfish, which are easy to catch with small hooks and pieces of shrimp. If you are looking for pinfish for bait, it won't take long to fill up the bait bucket here.

At times you can catch finger mullet and shrimp here too, but the water on both sides of the road is loaded with junk (rocks and oyster shells) so it's not a great place to throw a cast net.

No telling what you might see or catch here; I've seen dolphins this far into the creek chasing bait fish and I've seen people catch juvenile tarpon here too.

A bad day of fishing is much better than a good day of cutting the grass.
